The heirs must not travel together even if they are travelling to the same destination! This ritual was very relevant in the old times.
The heirs were under constant threat of assassination, so they were made to travel separately to ensure their safety and to safeguard next in line future Kings. However, strangely this ritual is still followed today when there is no apparent threat or enemies of the Crown inside or outside the UK.
